When January and February were added to the Roman calendar, November maintained its name. The period early Saxons prepared for winter by sacrificing animals named Blotmonað in old English, meaning ‘blood month literally ‘month of sacrifice’.

Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is an American public holiday celebrated annually on November 11 to honor all persons serving in any branch of the United States Armed Forces. In 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, World War I ended and that day was called “Armistice Day”. In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Similarly, unknown soldiers were buried at Westminster Abbey in England and the Arc de Triomphe in France. All these monuments were erected on November 11 to commemorate the end of the “war to end all wars”. Shortly after the end of World War II, a war veteran named Raymond Weeks organized a “National Veterans Day” with a parade and festivities to honor all veterans, and he chose to keep this on Armistice Day.

Thus began a day-long annual celebration to honor all veterans, not just the end of World War I. In 1954, Congress officially passed, and President Dwight Eisenhower signed a bill declaring November 11 as Veteran’s Day. Raymond Weeks received the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Ronald Reagan in November 1982, for his role in creating this national holiday. In 1968, Congress changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October.

However, the importance of November 11 was so important that the changed date could never be determined precisely. The Congress turned the Veteran’s Day celebration back into its traditional history in 1978. National ceremonies commemorating Veteran’s Day are held annually at the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknown. At 11:00 am on November 11, a colored guard, representing all military service, executes “Available Weapons” at the tomb. Later, a presidential wreath is laid on the grave. Finally, the trumpeter taps sound.

Thanksgiving

It is a national holiday celebrated in the USA and Canada to thank for the harvest and all the blessings of the past year. Due to the different harvest calendars brought by the difference of latitude between the two countries, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the USA.

Although the origin of the holiday was a harvest meal believed to have been jointly organized by the first British colonists (Pilgrims) in Plymouth with the Wampanoag Indians, today it has become devoted to the lonely family and God, separated from the Native American elements. Celebrations, especially in the United States, are rich in mythology and symbolism.

Turkey is the traditional dish of the day, and the feast has a variety of origins. According to a legend, the Wampanoag tribe, the native of the northeastern corner of the USA, known today as the New England geographical region, observed that the British settlers (Pilgrims), who first set foot on the American continent in Plymouth in 1620, did not get used to the geography of the region and the tribe saw that they were struggling with hunger because they could not produce productive crops that they used to grow.

The tribe pitied the plight of the new settlers and shared their own game and crops with benevolence and hospitality. This celebration, which emerged from the peaceful union of the two communities, was an inspiration and model for future Thanksgiving celebrations.

FYI, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, not 1621.

My ancestors arrived in Plymouth in 1623.
